Description
The Johnson Controls MM-CVT101-0 is a bus converter module for the Johnson Controls Metasys N2 Bus - an RS-232 to RS-485 converter that lets a PC talk to N2 field controllers. Supplied with a power supply.
What it is for, in Johnson Controls' own words. Describing the commissioning of a Metasys Unitary (UNT) controller, Johnson Controls states: "The configuration of the UNT can be uploaded, downloaded, and commissioned over the N2 Bus using an Operator Workstation (OWS) with HVAC PRO for Windows and an NCM, or a PC with HVAC PRO for Windows and an MM-CVT101-0."
That is exactly the job this module does. A laptop has a serial port; the N2 Bus is an RS-485 daisy chain. The MM-CVT101-0 sits between them, so an engineer with HVAC PRO for Windows can connect directly to the trunk and upload, download and commission controllers without needing an Operator Workstation or an NCM on site. For anyone servicing a legacy Metasys installation, that is the difference between being able to work on the system and not.

About the N2 Bus. Johnson Controls describes it as "a daisy chain communications line... three wires carrying three signals: N2+, N2-, and REF. The N2+ and N2- lines carry the data signals. The REF line provides a reference so that each connected device is capable of electrically receiving and transmitting data by creating a common voltage reference among all the devices connected together by the N2 lines. Three lines are required." If you are commissioning on an N2 trunk, all three conductors have to be present - a two-wire connection will not work reliably.
This is a service tool, not a control device. It does not sit permanently in the system; it is what an engineer carries to site. If you maintain Metasys installations, it is the kind of item worth having in the van rather than sourcing in a hurry - and since it is discontinued, availability is finite.
Check your laptop before you order. This module was designed for the era of built-in serial ports and uses a 25-pin to 9-pin conversion. Modern machines generally have neither, so you will most likely also need a USB-to-serial adapter, and older configuration software may want a specific operating system. In the event that B2E Surplus determines that a Product contains a defect in materials or workmanship, then B2E Surplus, in its sole discretion, will (a) repair the Product, (b) replace the Product, or (c) refund the purchase price of the Product. EXCLUSIONS. This warranty does not cover (a) any failures which are not attributable to defects in materials or workmanship, including without limitation, failures caused by accidents, inadequate maintenance, misuse, unauthorized modifications or repairs, improper storage, and normal wear and tear, (b) any consumable parts or accessories, such as cutter blades, nut splitter chisels, punches, dies, chains, wedges, and strands, that are designed to wear over time or through use of the Product, or (c) electronics, motors, batteries, and engines, as these items are warranted by their manufacturer.
WARRANTY RETURNS. No Products shall be returned without prior authorization from B2E Surplus. Buyer shall prepay all shipping charges for the return of Products to B2E Surplus’ designated service location.
LIMITATION OF LIABILITY. IN NO EVENT SHALL B2E SURPLUS BE LIABLE FOR ANY INCIDENTAL DAMAGES, CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES, SPECIAL DAMAGES, INDIRECT DAMAGES, LOSS OF PROFITS, LOSS OF REVENUES, OR LOSS OF USE, EVEN IF INFORMED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.
